Cognitive Modelling

We are doing research in the interdisciplinary Cognitive Science, that links the fields of neuroscience, biological anthropology and psychology, with artificial intelligence, computer science, mathematics, and physics. Why? In the long run, our objective is to be able to simulate mental functions based on brain processes (within a limited scope). Read more...

Human-Machine Interfaces

Computer science, along with robotics offer humans the possibility of communicating with electronic devices. We are interested in making this communication as natural as possible. An exciting work, our team, is working on is to develop algorithms to take into account real-time signals to control a knee prothesis. The next steps will include the development of the actual mechanic prothesis and solve all problems to have an exciting proposal for people with specific knee problems.

Virtual Reality

As a group of artificial intelligence researchers, we are excited about the possibilities that Virtual reality (VR) can bring to the computer-simulation of environments recreating sensory experience and, with the usage of haptic devices, breakthrough and achieve virtual presence. Our work in this area goes more in the direction of exposing users to a well-controlled context to achieve specific tasks, in order to compare human behavior with that of an avatar or an informatic entity.

Multi-Agent Systems

This field is of interest to our group since it describes systems composed of (software) agents that tend to find the best solution for their problems "without intervention." Therefore, Distributed Artificial Intelligence or MAS. are very well suited for the interoperability in the ecosystems we do research. Some inspiring use of MAS we are working on is the autonomous composition of pervasive services. That is, the ecosystem detects a need; by itself, proposing a solution employing a pervasive service composition.
